Classroom Information

Absences & Lates

Parents are responsible for notifying their child's teacher or the office when the student is absent.   Students are responsible for making up missed work and will be given a reasonable amount of time to complete it.  Much of the work we do in class cannot be made up (group work, hands on activities etc.) so regular attendance is essential.

If a student is late they must first check in at the office.  The same applies for when students are picked up early from school.

Birthdays

Parents are welcome to send birthday treats for the class on their child's birthday.  The snacks will be shared after the afternoon recess during our lunch time.  Please send individually wrapped or sliced portions.

Book Orders

Families can choose to order books from the Scholastic Canada Book Club flyers that will be available each month.  This is an excellent way to support reading in our classroom and at home, as the books are reasonably priced, students can choose books that are at appropriate levels and of interest to them, and our classroom will earn FREE BOOKS AND RESOURCES!

Please, only send cheque (NO cash).  You now have the option to pay online with your credit card!  For more information CLICK HERE!

Donations

Our classroom is always happy to accept donations.  Helpful items include...

- magazines (for cut-up)       - scissors

Homework

Other than the Home Reading Program, students will not be assigned homework just for the sake of doing work at home.  Grade 4 students are still kids and need to have a fun, active life outside of school.  With that being said, if a student does not complete an assignment during the time given in class then they will be required to finish it at home.  All classwork will be posted under “Announcements” on our class website. Parents are also asked to check their child's agenda each night.  Students can access websites for extra practice by visiting the "Students" section of our class website.

Supplies

A list of required school supplies is sent home with students in the spring of the previous year.  While students come well supplied at the beginning of the year, it is the responsibility of parents to ensure that their child has everything that they need for school as the year progresses.  January is a good  time to restock pencils, erasers, and other items that are running low.  Accomodations can be made for families with special circumstances.

Technology

It is school policy that students must leave all electronic devices in their lockers.  If a parent needs to get in touch with his or her child they can contact the office.

Visiting & Volunteering

I have an open door policy in regards to my classroom.  Parents are welcome to visit and important dates that are of interest to parents will be posted under  "Announcements" on our class website.  All visitors must check in at the office first and pick up a visitor tag.

Volunteers are welcome and will be called upon for various activities and events throughout the year.  Please feel free to email me or our class parent representative if you are interested in volunteering.  Thank you for your support!  All volunteers must have a Criminal Record and Child Welfare Check turned into the office prior to volunteering.

Home Reading Program

Reading is a skill that, just like riding a bike or playing a sport, you need to practice in order to get better at it.  The more you read the more you will notice other skills start to develop too, like your spelling and writing skills.

There are hundreds of different kinds of books from advenure to humor, fantasy to biography, so everyone can find a genre (type of book) that they will enjoy.  Graphic novels and comic books are great to read too!

It is important to choose books that are at your reading level.  A general rule is if there are more than five words on a page that you do not understand, then the book is too difficult for you.  You also want to challenge yourself too, so a couple unfamiliar words are okay.

How it Works:

You will not be required to read at home every day, but you will have to read AT LEAST 20 days out of a month, for A MINIMUM OF 20 minutes.

Each month you will get a calendar to record your home reading days, the time you read for and the titles of the books you chose.  Your parents will need to sign your reading sheet too.

At the end of the month you will hand in your reading calendar.

Home Reading Strategies:

If you get stuck on a word, try these tips...

1. Sound it out

2. What does the word start with? End with?

3. Look at the picture, is there any clues? Does that make sense here? Do the letters match?

4. Skip the word. What word would make sense there? Does that match the letters?

5. Re-read the sentence

6. Look for small words in big words

7. Think in your head- what would make sense here?
